Day 1: Journey to Jeremiah’s Grave – Explore Loughcrew & Megalithic Tombs (September 29)
Check out of our hotel at 9 am and begin a 1.5-hour drive to the alleged grave site of the Jewish prophet Jeremiah, who is said to have escorted the daughter of Zedekiah, the last King of Judah, to Ireland in 583 BC, where she married the High King of Ireland at Tara. Arrive at Loughcrew Megalithic Centre, where we will explore all of the sites, particularly Cairn T.
Next, we drive to Slieve Gullion Passage Tomb, a megalithic site tied to the goddess with incredible views. The mountain is associated with the Cailleach, the old hag and goddess who created the land.
We then visit Faughart, the birthplace of the legendary saint, St. Brigid, and her shrine. Brigid was considered a living continuation of the Celtic goddess Brig. We’ll also visit the nearby Ballykeel Dolmen, followed by a stop at Proleek Dolmen before a 2-hour drive to The Salthouse Hotel & Spa on the northern coast. After check-in, regroup for dinner at the Lookout Restaurant, where, on clear days, you can see the shores of Scotland.
